Lady Victoria Wellesley was the great-niece of the Duke of Wellington and when her 2 aunts that raised her died, Lady Victoria was left to fulfil their wishes that this church be built in what was a developing part of town. William, Duke of Devonshire conveyed the land in 1876; Parr and Strong of London were the architects and local builder James Perrless completed the work. Build on marsh, the foundations were sunk to 20ft. The Bishop of Chichester consecrated the church on July 6th, 1872. Lady Victoria was anxious the church was for all hence the name 'All Souls.' The completion of the disabled access in 2006 furthered her aim. Having just celebrated our 125th anniversary, we thank God that his good news of Jesus has been proclaimed here for so long. If you have any information about our church history, we'd love to hear from you! |
